Cricket : South Africa Series should be five tests longIt seems a mystery to many within the odds betting community as to why Australia have been hauled over to England for a five match ODI series while South Africa are restricted to just three Tests. Well, it isn’t that much of a mystery, it’s for money. Though South Africa are still box office and with the number one Test ranking at stake, it promises to be a thrilling series. But it will be a truncated one, and the game’s authorities should be rightly criticised for shoehorning in an Australia ODI series in the middle of the summer. The Australia team, gallantly led by Michael Clarke, look out of touch and out of form, with England coasting to three victories so far. Contrast that to the South Africans, who have prepared for the upcoming series with a training camp in Switzerland such is their desire to be fit and ready. The tourists arrived on these shores last weekend, fresh, fit and focused on the job. Captain Graeme Smith has a steely determination in his eyes and has already said they ‘need no extra motivation’ to play England. The talent littered throughout this Proteas side suggests we could be in for a classic. Yet it will only be three Tests long! Take the five-match Australia series out and there is more than enough room for two extra Tests - we are playing the Aussies next summer (and the following winter) anyway so it isn’t as if we will miss them. But instead we have this Ashes overkill as the organisers try and rinse the fans of every last penny. Except by doing so they devalue by the Australia contests and the others they have chipped away at, their greed actually makes everyone and everything worse off. So enjoy this upcoming series, the two sides competing for the world’s number one spot are sure to post some exciting live scores – weather permitting! It’s just a pity that it could have been so much better.
